
President General Musharraf, appreciating the role of World Bank in assisting Pakistan said the annual assistance of $ 1.5 billion would help the country bring necessary improvement in various sectors.
"Economic reforms introduced during last eight years were bearing fruits." He said the World Bank was a consistent partner in the development of Pakistan, and besides helping with infrastructure, the world financial body was also providing assistance in human development, education and health.
President Robert Zoellick appreciated Pakistan’s achievement in economy and stressed for continuity of reforms to attract more investment and cut down poverty. He said consistency in reforms was extremely important to help Pakistan compete the world market.
The World Bank Chief expressed willingness to assist Pakistan with infrastructure development including energy, ports and airports. He laid emphasis for further expanding education and health facilities to help the country achieve Millennium Development Goals.
The World Bank President unveiled an increase of $ 500 million in annual assistance to Pakistan while addressing a joint news conference with Prime Minister Aziz after their meeting. "The World Bank is extending annual assistance of $1.5 billion, which can be raised by another half-a-billion dollars as Pakistan can use the money for infrastructure and social sectors improvement” said Robert Zoellick.
Zoellick hoped to work with the government and extend support for dams and other water resources where possible. He said developing water resources was very crucial for Pakistan to help it meet with energy and irrigation needs. He said as technical assistance is being provided, different ideas are also under consideration in this matter.
